Skin Redness And IPL

General redness of your face can be bothersome, requiring foundation or spot cover-up to achieve an even complexion.  Redness can be caused by a variety of factors including rosacea, inflamed skin due to aggressive skin care products, or broken capillaries.

Broken capillaries, also known as spider veins, are small thread-like blood vessels that are visible under your skin.  They typically appear more as we age, and do not go away on their own.

They tend to appear around our nose, cheeks, and chin. As they cluster in these areas, they make your skin take on a ruddy, blotchy appearance.

Broken capillaries aren’t really broken.  They develop when the walls of the blood vessels that lie close to your skin weaken and become more visible. Causes of broken blood vessels include:

  • Environmental trauma (extreme temperatures, sun damage)
  • Predisposition due to genetics
  • Rosacea
  • Increased estrogen levels during pregnancy
  • Injuries that cause bruising or even pressing on your skin too aggressively (spot popping)
  • Excessive alcohol drinking

Topical skincare products cannot address broken capillaries. IPL light treatments are the safest and most effective way to treat them.  IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, uses the power of broadband light to effectively target broken capillaries. The wavelength of light pinpoints protein in the red blood cells, which helps destroy the broken capillary with the subsequent heat energy of the treatment. It does this without damaging the surrounding skin and blood vessels.

Approved by the FDA for more than two decades, IPL is a popular in-office treatment because it’s effective, affordable, and non-invasive.  Also known as photorejuvenation or the photo facial,  a great benefit of IPL is that it boosts collagen production meaning you’re left with more youthful-looking, glowing skin.  In addition to treating broken capillaries, it is also very effective for:

  • age spots and freckles
  • discoloration due to acne scars
  • boosting collagen for increased skin luminosity and improved texture
  • minimizing pore size

Areas that can be treated with light therapy include face, neck, chest, arms, and hands. Some results may be seen immediately, but in most cases, you will see results 2 – 4 weeks after treatment. Up to three treatments may be needed to ensure progressive results.

Light therapy treatments are quick in-office treatments that don’t require a lot of downtime. Many clients describe the treatment as the sensation of a rubber band lightly popping against the skin.
