Skin Care Resolutions

As the new year begins, our thoughts turn to new year’s resolutions or intentions. What goals do we want to accomplish? Have we set intentions for self-improvement? Big or small, these help us reset our ambitions for what we’d like to accomplish during the year. Granted, at the top of the list for many are exercising more regularly and eating healthier. But what about a focus on making our skin healthier? It often takes a backseat to our busy lives, and what a shame because it’s so easy to achieve, maintain and protect healthy skin. Forming habits for healthy-looking skin is just what we’re going to outline for you. As they say, out with the old and in with the new! And it couldn’t be easier to achieve more young, vibrant and healthy-looking skin with these six skincare resolutions.

Skin Care Resolution #1: Apply Sunscreen Daily

Skincare experts are in unanimous agreement that the sun is the most detrimental threat to the health of your skin. The sun’s harmful rays wreak havoc on our skin leading to wrinkles, rough patches, brown spots, premature aging and an increased risk of cancer. Be sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen year-round, even on cloudy days, applying every two hours.

Skin Care Resolution #2: Cleanse Your Face Before Bedtime

No matter how tired you are, don’t neglect to cleanse your face before bedtime. It’s one of the biggest skincare sins. Our skin repairs and restores itself at night. Neglecting to remove the day’s naturally-occurring oil, grime, dirt and sweat inhibits the restorative process leading to premature aging and the breakdown of collagen and elastin. If you find that you’re too tired to wash your face at bedtime, try adopting the habit of washing it toward the end of your day.

Skin Care Resolution #3: Exfoliate Weekly

Exfoliating is a great way to reveal smoother, brighter skin by removing dead skin cells. As we age, the process of cell regeneration slows. This means that the body is slower at shedding dead skin cells and generating new ones. The body naturally sloughs dead skin cells; exfoliation just helps the process along. Exfoliating removes the barrier of dead skin cells to uncover fresh new cells below. This also opens the way for skincare products to penetrate more deeply, which makes them more effective.

Skin Care Resolution #4: Don’t Neglect Your Neck and Hands

Our necks and hands are often neglected in terms of a skincare routine and because of this, they tend to show signs of aging first. Be sure to include your neck and hands when establishing a healthy skincare routine of cleansing, exfoliation and use of skin care products including sunscreen.

Skin Care Resolution #4: Drink More Water

Drinking water is as important for your skin as it is your general health. Common signs of dehydrated skin include:

  • Dull, tired-looking skin
  • Sensitive, itchy patches
  • Dark under-eye circles
  • Increased appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

In arid climates, like Bend, it’s even more important to drink water to replenish water lost due to the environment. There are several formulas to use when calculating how much water to drink. An easy one to remember is to take half of your body weight (in lbs.) and drink that in ounces of water.

Skin Care Resolution #5: Use a Serum

Serums are concentrated, small molecule solutions that absorb quickly and deeply into the skin. They have a rich concentration of antioxidants, peptides or growth factors. An antioxidant serum, for instance, can help limit the damage caused by pollution and UV light. Advanced serums and skincare products containing appropriate levels of key ingredients can help your skin stay balanced and keep the signs of aging at bay.

Skincare Resolution #6: See Your Dermatologist Annually

Make a commitment to schedule an annual appointment with your dermatologist, not just when you have an immediate concern. A dermatologist can evaluate your skin for growths, rashes, and changes in tone and texture. These symptoms can be underlying conditions of disorders and diseases that require medical treatment. You can leave the appointment confident that you’re minding the health of your skin, not just on your face but your entire body.
